Trauma-adapted yoga,
a Swedish, research-based method

Trauma-Adapted Yoga (Traumaanpassad yoga Sverige; TAY) is a Swedish, research-based method developed for people with PTSD or other common psychiatric diagnoses and a desire to practice yoga.

During the Foundational Training in Trauma-Adapted Yoga (TAY-70), you will learn to understand how yoga and practically tested embodied methods can support the relief of symptoms related to traumatic stress, improve self-regulation and emotional regulation, as well as reduce muscle tension, strengthen the autonomic nervous system and improve overall wellbeing.

In the TAY-70 foundational training, you will learn the basics of the TAY method and pedagogy, trauma theory and neurobiology so that you can safely guide your clients through embodied practices for stress regulation.

The foundational training is 70 hours in length and is aimed at yoga teachers and social welfare and health care professionals or those working in education who have at least two years of experience in conducting their own yoga practice.

Trauma-Adapted Yoga as a method training is sought after and well-established in many services and institutions both in Sweden and internationally. In Finland, the TAY-70 foundational training will be organised for the third time in spring 2026. The TAY-70 training in Finland is led by Josefin Wikström, yoga therapist and founder of Traumaanpassad yoga.

After completing the TAY-70 training, participants will have the opportunity to continue their studies in the 300 hour training in Trauma-Adapted Yoga (TAY-300), which will begin in Finland in March 2027.

Research projects on the effects of Trauma-Adapted Yoga as a support for psychiatric treatment are underway in the United States, Sweden, Finland and Vietnam.

In a project researching the effects of Trauma-Adapted Yoga as a support for forensic psychiatric treatment, yoga participants were found to have fewer negative emotions, anxiety and hostility, a reduced frequency of pain, and improved self-direction (Kerekes, 2024). Yoga was found to provide comprehensive support for psychological, emotional, and physical well-being (Lundström, Kerekes & Johansson, 2025).

You can read more about the
Trauma-Adapted Yoga method and current research projects on the Swedish website www.traumaanpassadyoga.com.

Said about
the TAY-70 training

"The training was really good and the approach was particularly suitable for my own work, which is what I was hoping for from the training. With the help of these teachings, yoga methods can be included in therapy as one of the supporting elements."

- psychotherapist
"The training provided researched information about stress and trauma, as well as the brain and autonomic nervous system. The training effectively included information, practical exercises and self-study, as well as guidance practice. The methods and techniques taught were reviewed with research related to them, as well as justifications for why and how they are used with different groups.

I greatly appreciate Josefin's experience, knowledge and warm approach. Anne and Perhejooga, as the training organizer, supported the group throughout the training, and it was really useful to also have the training content translated into Finnish.

I recommend the training to all yoga teachers and/or those working in the social and health care sector. We need more understanding of trauma and stress and how they affect us."

- theatre instructor (BA), yoga teacher

Is the tay-70 training a training in children's yoga?

No. The TAY-70 training focuses on guiding Trauma-Adapted Yoga to adults. However, during the training you will learn practices that are suitable for adults as well as children and adolescents.

Voinko maksaa osallistumismaksun osissa?

Yes you can. The reservation fee (250 e) is paid upon registration. The remainder of the participation fee is paid in one installment (1100 e) or in four installments of 287.50 euros (total 1150 e). Training materials (45 e) are invoiced with the first installment.

Is this a yoga teacher training?

TAY-70 training is continuing education for yoga teachers and professionals in the social and health care system and education. TAY-70 training is not a yoga teacher training and does not alone give the right to use the title yoga instructor or teacher.

TAY-70 is both an independent training package and the first part of a larger, 300-hour Trauma-Adapted Yoga training. In order to use the title Trauma-Adapted Yoga teacher, you must have completed both the TAY-300 training and the RYT200 yoga teacher training (or equivalent).

Can I start teaching trauma-adapted yoga classes after the training?

If you are already a RYT200 yoga teacher (or equivalent), after the TAY-70 training you can state that you teach Yoga for Stress Regulation, and your teaching follows the methods of Trauma-Adapted Yoga (Traumaanpassad yoga Sverige).

If you have not completed the RYT200 yoga teacher training (or equivalent), you can use what you have learned in the training in your work in addition to your other professional skills.

However, you cannot start teaching Trauma-Adapted Yoga classes open to everyone before you have completed the yoga teacher training.

You can call your teaching Trauma-Adapted Yoga when you have completed the entire TAY-300 training (+ RYT200 yoga teacher training or equivalent).

I have no previous experience with yoga. Can I participate?

You can participate in this training if you are a yoga teacher OR work in the social and health care services or education AND you have at least two years of experience in your own yoga practice.

It is not possible to participate without previous yoga experience.

Said by the participants

“The training provided comprehensive training for guiding Trauma-Adapted Yoga. Embodiedness remained strongly present in all practices and lectures throughout the training. The effects of trauma on the body and mind, the functioning of the autonomic nervous system and the regulation of alertness were examined in creative and new ways, and I looked forward to each training session with enthusiasm.

As a professional, I already knew quite a lot about trauma and its effects, but despite that, I learned a lot of new tools from the training, not only for my work but also for teaching yoga.

Josefin’s teaching style was warm and inspiring, and Anne was a right hand to support with practical matters and questions. Looking forward to further training!”

- social worker VTM, crisis and trauma work professional
"Participating in the TAY-70 training is one of the best decisions I have ever made!

Josefin's incredible knowledge and the warm atmosphere of the training provided a learning opportunity based on researched knowledge, including the basics of Trauma-Adapted Yoga, stress, trauma and the brain.

The training gave me a good foundation on which to build practical skills for guiding yoga to support stress regulation in the future.

The training days were like a mini retreat and I learned a lot of new things. Thank you Josefin and Anne and the whole group <3 "

- TtM, yoga teacher
"I think the training was really great and well structured. I have never been to any training where the Zoom days were so well planned.

Josefin and Anne are both really wonderful and sensitive trainers. Their knowledge is amazing and the content of the training was well planned. I think the topic is really important, and I would think that all yoga teacher trainings should include TAY studies. It seems crazy that this is not the case.

The material and the books chosen for the training support the whole well. The foundatioanl training provided a lot of information on trauma and is therefore very suitable for a wide range of professionals, not just yoga teachers.

Thank you both for this wonderful and wonderful training. I am looking forward to when the next phase comes to Finland. <3
